Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

The psychodynamic approach explores the extent to which our present is influenced by our past. Often unhelpful patterns of relating and behaving, that have their origin in our early experiences, continue to exert a negative influence on the way we live, feel and relate, now. It is only by becoming aware of these unconscious influences that we can develop the ability to change and live more satisfying and rewarding lives, rather than endlessly repeating old conflicts and traumas.

Psychotherapy sessions last for 50 minutes and are usually held weekly. Within a safe and confidential space confusing or distressing thoughts, feelings and patterns of relating can be explored and made sense of in a way that enables insight and change.

Trauma

Many events can be experienced as traumatic: being a victim of violence or abuse, having or causing a fatal accident, witnessing serious injury or death. More ‘ordinary’ life events can also be experienced as profoundly traumatic–e.g., redundancy, loss of status, workplace bullying, collapse of a needed relationship.

Symptoms may include ‘flash backs’, intrusive thoughts or memories, sleep disturbance, nightmares, irritability, and mood swings.  Many of those who have suffered trauma cope by avoiding stressful situations or by over-using drugs and alcohol.

Andrew is a fully trained Practitioner of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing), a powerful psychological treatment method that was developed by American Clinical Psychologist Dr. Francine Shapiro, in the 1980s. Since then a wealth of research has been conducted demonstrating its benefits in treating psychological trauma.

EMDR is recommended by The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as a treatment of choice in relation to psychological trauma. Read more about EMDR at www.emdrassociation.org.uk.

I was referred to Andrew for help in connection with complex PTSD and the multiple self-destructive behaviours – eating disorders, alcoholism, self-harm, and suicidal tendencies – that had manifested from it. These sorts of behaviours, along with general anxiety and depression, have dogged me for over 40 years. Despite being hopeful I was not optimistic and had resolved to end my life unless given good reason not to.

Andrew approached our sessions with empathy, respect, and a deep appreciation for the unique challenges that come with this condition. He is patient and thoughtful, taking the time to listen carefully to my experiences and concerns, and providing thoughtful and insightful feedback and guidance. Over time he led me to question, possibly for the first time, why I felt responsible for so many of the things that had been done to me from a young age; that, maybe, was the key to having begun to dare to look forward with hope.

Andrew literally and figuratively saved my life. He is a wonderful man, and I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Notwithstandng the spaghetti of letters after his name, Andrew Wood is the most understanding and intelligent of people. He absorbs information like a sponge. Everything he says is apposite. He is deft and empathetic. He helps you navigate the glass shards of past distress and trauma and helps you walk away from it all. After years or decades of numbness and depression you start to not want to be dead, but to live. In the end you can feel and laugh and cry and experience joy. And that is wonderful.

Having spent time with counsellors before who were very happy to listen, Andrew works at a different level; his ability to listen, to remember, to offer encouragement and support, ultimately allowing me to find my own positive solutions to feelings, emotions, history and experiences, made my time with him the most important time I have ever spent with anyone on a professional basis. His input has made a significant difference in both my family and business life.

Andrew is incredibly insightful, professional and pragmatic, offering real world strategies for dealing with complex mental health issues

Andrew is a compassionate, patient and considerate psychotherapist. I felt that he was highly focused in every single session, and we really connected from our first meeting. Andrew gave the space for me to explore my thoughts and offered extremely helpful insights, drawing on information that I had shared, and on his vast knowledge of psychology. This helped me to reframe a lot of harmful feelings that I had about myself and my experience. It is not too big a statement to say that EMDR therapy with Andrew has changed and potentially saved my life. I was at a point before therapy where I couldn’t see a way out, but with Andrew’s help I have grown to be stronger than ever before. I am no longer troubled by the symptoms of my trauma. I cannot thank him enough.

I was referred to Andrew after being diagnosed with PTSD and anxiety. Whilst initially sceptical of EMDR therapy, I found that my symptoms improved in a short period of time. Throughout my treatment, Andrew was compassionate, respectful and understanding of my health condition. I am hugely grateful for his assistance in helping me through a turbulent chapter of my life

Andrew has helped me enormously over the last 18 months, both in my professional life and in my close relationships. He has a talent for identifying and addressing the core issues affecting interpersonal relationships. He is perceptive and highly empathic. I have tried a number of different therapists to help overcome symptoms of depression and low self esteem and Andrew’s approach has allowed me to really effect a shift and positive change in my life.

I highly recommend Andrew for anyone seeking guidance in self-compassion and understanding the roots of their behaviors. Andrew's compassionate approach and insightful techniques helped me navigate the complexities of my challenging childhood, leading to personal growth and emotional healing. I am truly grateful for Andrew's support and guidance throughout the year we worked together.

I came to see Andrew after an accident that had left me deeply traumatised. In my time with Andrew, I went from being in a complete meltdown to being well on the road to recovery. I thought Andrew did a really good job of asking questions and making observations that helped me develop an understanding of my experience and the underlying reasons why it had affected me so strongly. I felt he struck a really good balance between giving encouragement to my dawning realisations without pushing his own view on to my understanding. I appreciated his flexibility in how we structured our sessions and I felt he really respected my autonomy. I found Andrew to be a very warm, friendly, thoughtful, professional, and non-judgmental therapist. I would really recommend Andrew to anyone looking for either general talking therapy or specialist support with trauma.

Andrew helped me immensely with my recovery from a long-standing mental health crisis. He was empathetic, patient and helped me discover the root cause of my problems early on in our sessions. EMDR therapy was used and still forms the foundation of my recovery. I use EMDR daily and I honestly feel that Andrew’s sessions helped me realise "I am good enough".

I had EMDR and therapy with Andrew Wood for about 18 months. It was amongst the most important transformative experiences of my life. I have PTSD complicated by OCD, which is a challenging mental state to work with. Nevertheless, Andrew tackled this with focus and flexibility leading to a number of breakthroughs. I would recommend him to anyone who is experiencing challenges with their mental health.

HUGE thanks again to you for helping me make sense of so much - A year on I feel much safer inside me and will keep reminding myself that “I am good enough” and “was always good enough”.

Thank you for everything. I'm really grateful for all your help and support.

'I spent around 18 months doing weekly sessions with Andrew. From the very first day, he made me feel comfortable speaking about my trauma and created a safe space where I could open up. He introduced me to techniques that helped me face my fears, process my trauma, and move forward with life in a more positive and loving way.
I found EMDR with Andrew incredibly helpful. It allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of myself and my behaviours. He was always very clear and insightful when explaining how the brain works, the science behind EMDR, and how it relates to my experiences. This made the whole process feel both empowering and grounded.
Andrew’s approach has made a real difference in my life, and I’m truly grateful for the support he’s provided.'
